| How Safe are your Swiss Balls? |
| |
|
|
Les Mills Personal Training Systems Manager, Anthony Wall, recently shared the following report with us:
“WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with EB Brands, Yonkers, NY, announced a voluntary recall of 3 million fitness balls sold under the Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, Valeo and Body Fit brands.
When overinflated, the fitness balls can unexpectedly burst while in use, causing the user to fall. EB Brands has received 47 reports of fitness balls bursting, including reports of a fracture and multiple bruises.
The recall involves rubber fitness balls sold in 55-, 65- and 75-centimeter diameter sizes in various colors and with a pump and inflation instructions. Advertised as “burst-resistant,” the fitness balls were sold in department stores and by fitness retailers nationwide from May 2000 to February 2009 for between $15 and $30.”
And in addition to this, there are currently two lawsuits at the moment regarding injuries on balls using weights. So we ask...how safe are your Swiss Balls?
|
.jpg) |
It is very important to use a high quality ball product that is actually “anti-burst” such as the DuraBall Pro Swiss Ball. This particular brand has been tested by the University of Newcastle engineering department, and if a puncture occurs, it will deflate slowly rather than burst. It is still possible for a DuraBall to get punctured, but the risk is much lower. Click here to view further testing information. |
 |
In regards to failure occurring, there is always a safety factor involved…common sense and prevention should always prevail!
Gym Instructors and Personal Trainers should be advised to use good spotting techniques whenever there is an increased risk of injury to a client. For example: |
- A chest press with a bar on a Swiss Ball should be performed in a squat cage with safety catch bars
- A dumbbell chest press on a Swiss Ball should be performed with an alert spotter, ready to support the wrists and/or catch the dumbbell/s if necessary
- Trainers should inspect Swiss Balls for cuts or nicks at every use
- Facilities (in particular larger, busy gyms) should have a procedure in place to ensure the Swiss Balls are checked regularly and updated when showing signs of wear and tear through overuse.
A great example of this is one of our customers of the DuraBall Pro Swiss Ball - Les Mills. |
|
 |
Les Mills checks their Swiss Balls weekly and use a number system for each ball. These are checked and recorded on a weekly check list done by the Gym Instructors. They update their Swiss Balls every 2 months or when they show signs of wear and tear. |
What a fantastic example to set for all gyms! |
|
| |
|
So we hope this is a friendly reminder to go and check your Swiss Balls! And if you visit a facility where the Swiss Balls look worn or unsafe...tell them!
