HELLO AND WELCOME

to your Health Central news…

Funny as I was pondering what I’d write today I thought about busyness and lack of connecting with ourselves and I recognize I’ve been a little slack as far as keeping in touch, so if I haven’t seen you for a while hopefully I will entice you to come and visit – whether that be coaching for personal or life shifts, or mini wellbeing consult or come along to an hour of relaxation or better yet do all 3! You’re worth it…and you’ll be pleased you did.

Been a reflective couple of months for me with 3 colleagues passing away, interesting how each of us expresses different and personal health challenges and my young cousin with a heart attack…and my Uncle struggling with his loss of his daughter and him having a heart attack and being put in an induced coma and now expressing diabetes and a steep climb back to living well.  Makes me ponder what are we without our health? & when we lose it how we respond can make the difference!


MANAGING HEALTH

It’s a lot easier to manage our health than to have to deal with coming back from crises.  After 15 years working with Mind and Body wellbeing I know for certain that our genetics only get switched on if we are not managing our stressors – not getting the best from our thinking, believing and perceiving… 
 

balancing lifes challenges and enriching our love and joy and passions in our direction day to day is crucial.

Yes once you have challenged health you may not be able to reverse all at the physical level, but by working more with ‘positive shifts’ particularly in mind and emotions more resourcefully and re-connecting to life with our personal heart-felt meaning & direction can make all the difference to recovery! 

Our physical bodies are really just expressions (more often the secondary experience) and the key is to figure out what the message is they are trying to direct us to...do and be?  Often it’s feedback about our contentment in life and our ability to work through  challenges and increase love and joy for all that we do.  My interest in Wellbeing is yes to support the physical but the magical ‘shifts’ come when we are aligning our head and hearts and then living our best expression of ourselves in these physical bodies is easier.  The gift of Health Central is all about a holistic ‘shift’ that brings the best of you to your daily life!

Life always gives us what we need – many of us have noticed that life has a way of furnishing some very precise lessons about what we need to learn.  This phenomenon also applies to our life purpose.  The more we see ‘problems’ as invaluable lessons that we may not want but might just need, we take life’s ups and downs with greater equanimity and even with gratitude.  You might consider for a moment how life has provided the perfect circumstances for you to face the issues of your life path.

Change can seem daunting but when its chunked into doable steps and you have new resources along the way, you will look back and be glad you ‘stepped up’ to being all you can be – your best self expression each day going forward!


COMMON QUESTIONS IN COACHING

‘What is my life for?  What is success for me?  What makes me happy?  Who am I really?’ and yes these questions scare the shit out of most people – a life unquestioned often stays the same.  We can go through life or we can grow through life.   Are you re-evaluating meaning and what really matters?  True success should not have to cost you your joy, your health and your relationships!  On the contrary, true success is about enjoying these things.
 

  • Do you have a real vision that allows you to embrace your journey and allows you to be in discovery and are you engaging your whole being? 
  • How are you going with your 2010 vision and goals?

– good time for reflection as we are close to 1/3rd way through 2010


OUR MANIC SOCIETY

have you ever seen the Monty Python comedy sketch, “the 100 yards dash for people with no sense of direction?

Picture the scene; it is the Silly Olympics.  The stadium is full.  There is a blue sky overhead.  There is a sense of great anticipation as the main event is about to begin.  Assembled at the starting line are the finalists – an elite band of runners who have absolutely no sense of direction.

The runners are clearly agitated.  They are itching to get on with the race.  The starting gun fires and the runners are off.  Very quickly they all leave the track- sprinting forwards, sprinting backwards, sprinting sideways, and sprinting in circles.  They are all running extremely fast.  Maximum haste.  Great effort.  Fantastic speed.  Very athletic.  But there is no track, no direction, no finishing line and, ultimately, no purpose to the running.

The above is a great metaphor for our speeded-up world, full of people chasing success and pursuing happiness.  The pace of life for many of us has accelerated past fast to manic.  The word ‘manic’ is derived from ‘mania’, which is a psychology term for an absence of intelligence, a type of madness, ‘a mood disorder characterized by a variety of symptoms including extreme motor activity, impulsiveness, obsessiveness and excessively rapid thought and speech’.

The danger is we leave ourselves behind, we leave behind what is precious, and we leave behind the truth. 
Winston Churchill – men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up  and hurry off as if nothing happened.


When did you last re-set your focus & intention to ensure you are enriching your life and work and relationships and not just on automatic pilot?  We always have more choice but what choice are we making?


INNER DIRECTION

Where there is no vision our direction is stagnant sometimes stuck or even backwards recycling same old.  Think for a moment, how often do you catch yourself participating in the 200-yard dash for people with a poor sense of direction?  Each morning when your alarm clock goes off and you get up and go, where are you going and why? 

James Thurber;  all men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why?
 

The most successful and happy people I know are good at making time for reflection and inspiration.  They stop regularly to go deeper, to gain perspective, to hold a vision and to receive direction.  How often do you make time in your day for inspiration, meditation and reflection?  Or does time pass too quickly?  How often do you make time for vision and strategy?  Or is there not enough time?  How often do you communicate with the people who are most important to you?  Or is time already taken up?  And how often do you stop and acknowledge a success, a joy or a good moment?  Or are you so revved up and so behind already that you can’t find the time?


BEYOND BUSYNESS

I choose and plan for my pace to be slower and I am more discerning, more strategic and ultimately, I believe, more effective because of it.  I charge about less, but I get through more of what is really important.  Slowing down and even stopping – helps radically to improve the quality of our lives and work.  More intelligent pacing allows you to be more present and more effective.  Time for more important conversations, mentally more centered and more peaceful all through the day.
 
It is an old ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way…ever find yourself lost in the busyness and distraction of stuff!  Being busy can make you feel important, but is what you are busy about important?  Stopping, if only for a few minutes a day, is a way to connect again to your vision, your wisdom and your purpose.  As a coach, one of my chief functions is to help you stop for a while and reconnect.

I define coaching
as the opportunity to get into important conversations you would otherwise have been too busy to have.  The value of regular coaching is that it creates a space which helps you to punctuate your busyness.  Space is good for the soul... it is restorative and helps people to breathe deeper, to clear the mind, to connect to their wisdom, to remember what is important, and to be open to new possibilities.  Space to allow new insights and inspiration, epiphanies and eurekas.


WHITE SPACE

Maybe you are aware you do not have enough ‘white space’ in your day to day schedules.  White space refers to thinking time for vision and revaluation.  White space is the 20 minutes you take each day to make sure you are living and working wisely.  White space is an internal phone call you have with your inner intelligence – the inner wisdom we all have.  White space is the opportunity to review success and conduct a Busyness Audit. 


COURAGE TO LOOK AT YOUR BUSYNESS

A key to success is the courage to look at your busyness and identify what it is really about.  In my experience it is often an excuse, a defense or a resistance to an important challenge.  In other words, busyness is a blindfold you wear when you are afraid to face something.  Busyness is often just fear.  It can also mask a lack of trust.  It can be useful to explore how you might be using your busyness to avoid something important, such as intimacy, change, purpose, universal connection, yourself and even success.

Exercise;
  At the end of your work day do you get on with your life or do you merely recover from work?  Review your week and how much % is;
    a) tasks     b) relationships     c) vision

A primary goal of my coaching work is to help you be less hyperactive and more effective.  On the surface it looks like the hyperactive world of work is asking us to ‘do more’ but really it is asking us to think differently, imagine more, innovate more and partner more.  In the modern world of work there is no way we can do everything, so we have to be less hyperactive and more strategic.  Hyperactivity is often an excess of doing which is really a compensation for a lack of being, a lack of vision and a lack of invention.

You may find it useful to do a 4 quadrant list to look at how you are prioritizing your time and attention -  your ‘to do’s’ can be quite enlightening, which quadrant do you spend most of your time in? and which quadrant would you prefer to spend most of your time in?

  • Urgent
  • Need to
  • Want to
  • Wasting time

I am fortunate to be working with people like yourself who are already successful and want to continue their personal growth.  My work has been a great education for me, pushing me to grow and develop and be more effective and I’m forever grateful to be able to do the work I do, that expands your life and you realizing more of your potential. 

It has also prompted some deep questioning about success and happiness.  For instance, have you wondered why do millionaires take Prozac?  Why do CEOs have heart-attacks?  Why do film actors need rehab?  Why do politicians covet scandal?  Why do sports champions self-destruct?  Why isn’t success enough?


WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

Requires an inquiry and education about our identity (who am I?), about our personal values (i.e. what do I want?), and about our vision (i.e. what is my life for?).  One of my chief functions of my coaching work is to help you be more aware of your true potential.  Realizing our potential, and using it in intelligent ways, is our purpose and our salvation.  It is the key to success and happiness for ourselves in our triumph and picks us up in times when we feel defeated.

Authentic success – your goal is to find out who you are…some can go almost all the way through life as complete strangers to themselves- I think the gift in the trauma of illness or unhappiness is the stopping and looking within and redirecting our external lives with our internal compass accordingly to heart-felt fulfillment..


TRUE GOALS

What sort of goals have you set yourself this year?
Too often the language of goal setting is about ‘doing’, ‘having’, ‘getting’ and not about being; the greatest support to achieving these types of goals is more often firstly your self development and growth.

 

Briefly, goals can be identified as;
Spiritual goals – what is my vision? what do I value most?
Character goals – who am I? and who do I want to be?


The clearer you are about the above two goals, the easier it is to set authentic;
achievement goals – what do I want to do? 
Acquisition goals – what do I want to have? 
Relationship goals – how shall I be with others? 
Destination goals – where to I want to end up? 
Present time goals – what is important today?



I use this 7 point focus to help you get in touch with areas you may not be attending to - living your best self expression in your life?  We cannot change what we do not acknowledge, so see where you are losing power to and where you are doing well;

for your action;  take time to measure your level of contentment in each of the 7 areas below  1 being dissatisfied and 10 fully expressing all can be

__________   self empowerment -directing your life with purpose/passion  –  your self image/concept/perception…our inner talk can be great feedback to our sense of being okay or not. 

The more we practice self-acceptance, the easier it is to acknowledge our strengths, appreciate our successes, face up to challenges, be open to feedback, receive offers of help, and so on.  Our self image is formed from the judgments you and others make about yourself.  This self image is your ‘learned self’.  It is fashioned out of information, experiences, feedback and conclusions you make.  It may bear no relation to your ‘unconditioned self’, which houses your original potential and spiritual essence  when you change the way you see yourself you change your experience of the world.  Ultimately then, perception is a projection and the world is a mirror.  Thus, if you will see yourself differently your outlook can change, and so can your experience.

- resilience to step up     break the hold of old mental & emotional patterning leading to new behaviors – balanced approach to nutrition/fitness/rest/sleep & managing stress.  Our level of health is a useful feedback measure - are we on track or not?

__________   authentic success  living your potential and directing your life to express your unique talents, strengths, gifts and personal qualities…and how you can impact others positively.  Understanding your fears, worry of failure (past, present and future) and how to turn them to your shift in success.

Have you noticed as you step up and see the world either abundantly or lacking it responds accordingly?

__________     relationship & connection with self & others   our relationship with ourselves will show up in how we connect with others balance between victim and independence…excessive individualism includes a lot of ‘me thinking’.  ‘Dysfunctional independence’ as I call it – often a coping strategy for feelings of grief, a defense mechanism against being hurt again, and a compensation for the lack of intimacy and connection in our lives.  The fact is that at the heart of excessive individualism is a broken heart.  Relationships are the heart of success, and for that reason better communication always leads to more success in every area of your life.
